The “Surrey Rare Plant Register: the rare, scarce and declining plants of Surrey” was published in December 2024 after over a decade in preparation. Many thanks to numerous volunteers who have contributed records to it via our database. The book forms part of the Surrey Wildlife Atlas Series.
There has been no published work on the flora of the whole of Surrey since J.E. Lousley’s Flora of Surrey in 1976 and A.C. Leslie’s Supplement and Checklist in 1987. It is a first step towards filling this gap and a 21st Century guide to the national, regional and local priorities for nature conservation of plants in Surrey and forms a baseline for further analyses and from which future change can be assessed.
Surrey has a wide variety of soils and habitats supporting a richly diverse flora. This book provides details on the status and distribution of Britain’s rare, scarce and threatened plants that occur in Surrey and includes species that may be widespread elsewhere but are at risk in the county. The status of over 400 species is described and each is given an account, distribution map or records table (with site names and grid references). Colour plates show species in Surrey locations. The appendices provide a useful reference using both scientific and common names and show conservation categories and a summary table for ease of reference. Introductory sections cover species selection criteria and Surrey conservation responsibilities.
This book is therefore suitable for statutory agencies, conservation groups, landowners, land managers, consultants, and professional and amateur botanists. Everyone should have the opportunity to play their part in protecting, enjoying and treasuring Surrey’s diverse flora by improving their understanding of it and it is hoped that this book will assist with this endeavour.
When updates appear periodically, they will be presented here.
